Frequently asked questions about license renewal procedures in Tokyo

Here, we will answer frequently asked questions about the license renewal procedure in Tokyo.

What if I want to renew my license in a prefecture other than my place of residence?

Applying for driver's Driver's License renewal procedures in a prefecture other than your place of residence is called a transit application. Only drivers in good standing are allowed to apply for this route.

However, the following people cannot apply even if they are good drivers.

  • People who have been granted license conditions according to their physical condition (excluding glasses, etc. and hearing aids)
  • Persons who also report changes to written information and apply for reissuance at the time of application.

In addition, the location and date and time for transit applications are limited, so please check with the official website of each prefecture's police department or driver's license exam center.

What if I don't live in Tokyo and want to apply?

If you are not domiciled in Tokyo, you can renew your driving Driver's License in Tokyo (apply via the system) at the Kanda Driver's License Renewal Center and the Shinjuku Driver's License Renewal Center.

Reception hours are weekdays from 8:30 to 16:00. Here's what you'll need on the day:

  • driver's Driver's License
  • Update letter
  • 1 photo
  • Renewal fee 500 yen
  • Transit fee 550 yen
  • (Over 70 years old) Certificate of completion of elderly course, etc.

Aptitude tests and courses are held on the same day, but it takes about three weeks for the driver's Driver's License to be issued because the prefectural public safety commission of the address must decide whether or not to renew it. If you wish to have it mailed, please apply at the mailing counter of the Driver's License Renewal Center.

Check the time and place to apply for Driver's License in advance

There are 3 driver's license examination centers, 2 driver's license renewal centers, and 12 designated police stations in Tokyo. The procedures and dates and times that can be accepted differ for each, so be sure to check before using. Please note that the location where you can apply for license renewal will vary depending on the course category.

Parking spaces are limited, so please use public transportation instead of driving. It is also important to avoid days and times when it is expected to be crowded.
